Stepping out of your comfort zone

The comfort zone is a psychological place of comfort where you feel safe, in control, and experience minimal stress. It’s a space where habits, routines, and familiar experiences dominate. While being in the comfort zone feels good, staying in it too long can lead to stagnation and missed opportunities for growth. However, it is important to note that for some stages in your life it is ok to stay in your comfort zone, be still, at peace and just focus on stability. There are times in life when you are not ready to grow or explore and that’s ok.

Some people stay in it due to the fear of failure – from a work context, if you don’t feel psychologically safe or your environment is toxic it can mean you don’t want to venture out your comfort zone. The brain prefers predictability, so stepping into uncertainty feels uncomfortable, sometimes, the unknown can be too large and push you into the panic zone which makes you retreat into your comfort zone. There is a common saying that to grow, discover, be creative and innovate, you need to move out your comfort zone but at the same time I think it is important to note that your comfort zone is not a “bad place” to be in and we need to be able to move flexibly between the space of growth and comfort

On the flip side, to discover and reach your full potential does mean stepping out the comfort zone (when you are safe to do so) and embracing that slight sense of uncertainty, nervousness and wobble. New things take practice. Some things you can do to gently step out your comfort zone are:

  1. Take Small Steps – Start with manageable small challenges to test it out
  2. Reframe Fear as Excitement – Try to reframe your emotion to a positive growth mindset and be your own cheerleader
  3. Embrace Failure as a Teacher – Always thinks about the learning from failure, what can you take away and use?
  4. Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People – Being around others who push themselves & motivate you can be inspiring
  5. Try Something New Regularly – Learn a new skill, travel to a new place, or engage in different experiences.

The Growth Zone is where real progress, learning, and personal transformation take place. It’s where you truly begin to thrive. You have to push through your fear zone into your learning zone and then finally a place of growth. If the fear is too great or you experience panic you retreat back into your comfort zone. Real growth only happens when we push through fear and start learning. It is important to take small steps into the unknown to incrementally get to a space of growth.

In your growth zone, you experience:

  1. Increased Confidence & Self-Belief – You realise you’re capable of much more
  2. Higher Performance & Productivity – New challenges push you to level up your skills.
  3. Greater Adaptability – You become more comfortable with uncertainty and change.
  4. Achieving Goals & Dreams – You turn ambitions into reality by taking action
  5. Personal & Professional Breakthroughs – You step into leadership, build resilience, and develop mastery.

Stepping out your comfort zone is a big part of improvement, transformation, creative thinking and innovation. To think differently, you need to step out the confined norms and spaces of repetition. Being bold, trying different things and exploring means stepping out your familiar space and allowing yourself to be curious beyond your normal boundaries

The Comfort zone model has had several influencers and contributors over time but it started with Robert M. Yerkes & John D. Dodson (1908) Their work suggested that stepping slightly beyond the comfort zone is beneficial for growth. Their research found that a moderate level of stress (or challenge) enhances performance, while too much stress hinders it.
